I think it is worth considering that the sociopath might be the "other astronaut" that she was having the affair with. Please consider whether he manipulated her and drove her to this. That does not absolve her of resposibility for her actions. But I do think that most people, if pushed far enough, are capable of doing something "crazy."

The reason I would consider this is that in my own case, there is a family history in my husband's family of the men driving the women crazy. I have heard so many stories about my husband's "crazy" mother that I believed them. What didn't add up is that his older siblings had memories of her being very loving and nurturing. Next in line was my husband's first wife, who he had committed. He used the pity play with me to make me feel sorry for him for having had a crazy mother and then a crazy wife. When our marriage broke up, he tried to tell everyone that I "needed therapy." Now with 20/20 hindsight, I notice that his brother drove his wife crazy and at least one of his sons drove his wife crazy.

I think there is a reason we have the expression "driving someone crazy" in our language. I think it is genuinely possible to do this. I met both my husband's first wife and his mother. After living with this man for 20 years and coping with his manipulation, I think I was lucky to escape with my sanity. I think his mother, his first wife, his sister-in-law, and his daughters-in-law were victimized by cruel, sadistic, and predatory men. I think the mother was literally "driven crazy" and the first wife managed to escape with her sanity in spite of his best efforts to destroy it.
