Catfishing — sociopathic behavior, or a phase?

catfishI was recently interviewed for an online magazine article called Confessions of a catfish. When I communicated with the author, Aris Apostolopoulos, I had no idea that he was going to admit that he, himself, once engaged in catfishing.

Quite a few Lovefraud readers have told me about their experiences being catfished. This means they met someone online who fabricated a complete false identity, including a fake name, fake history, fake friends and fake crises.

Target almost died

One woman contacted me in 2012, before the word “catfishing” had entered the lexicon, to tell me her story. She was involved with a person for almost three years, entirely on the phone and social media. Never met the guy.

In the beginning he love bombed her, sent her gifts, and liked everything that she posted on Facebook. He sent her bouquets five days in a row to convince her to be his girlfriend.

If you’re involved in a toxic relationship, how do you get out? Or, if you’re a therapist treating a client who is in toxic relationship, how do you help them decide what to do? And if they decide to leave, how do you support them?

Amber Ault, Ph.D., MSW, offers practical and realistic advice in two webinars based on her book, ‘The Five Step Exit — The skills you need to leave a narcissist, psychopath or other toxic partner and recover you happiness now.’

Wesley Webb, 40, and her boyfriend, Keith Smith, 43, were arguing in the home they shared in Schuylkill Township, Pennsylvania. Webb turned on her cell phone to record his verbal abuse. Also recorded was the gunshot when Smith allegedly murdered her with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Smith then turned the weapon on himself, but survived a gunshot blast to his face.

Webb’s three children were in the house and called 911.

Sociopaths Assume We’ll Use Old Frameworks To Process New Information

Husband Liar Sociopath

By O.N. Ward

Every week, a chapter of my book, “Husband, Liar, Sociopath: How He Lied, Why I Fell For It & The Painful Lessons Learned” (available via Amazon.com, just click on the title or book cover) will be published here on Lovefraud. To read prior chapters, please see the links at the bottom of the post.

Chapter 7: What’s In It For Me? Another Red Flag Missed

Against the vast, sparkling sea of emotionally and intellectually fulfilling time spent together studying, attending classes, working out, sharing dinners, and looking for jobs, the ripples that appeared in my relationship with Paul hardly registered. No person or relationship is perfect, so of course there would be disagreements, small hurts, and misunderstandings. Only now am I wise enough to know that the root cause of the minor discord in our relationship was the important part —not the mere fact of the discord.

Bill Cosby admits giving drugs to teenagers; due in court today

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby is due in court today after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected an appeal to delay his trial. Cosby is charged with drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in his home outside of Philadelphia in 2004.

Cosby previously settled a civil suit filed by Constand. He contends that the district attorney at the time, Bruce L. Castor Jr., promised that Cosby would never face prosecution related to Constand’s allegations. The new district attorney, Kevin R. Steele, argues that no such agreement exists.

In depositions taken during the civil suit, Cosby admitted sex with a teenager, and said an agency sent him five or six young models a week around 2000.

Pa. Supreme Court won’t halt Cosby hearing, on Philly.com.

Bill Cosby DMITS to sexual encounters with teens and says agency sent him young models on a weekly basis in deposition released the day before he learns if sex assault case will go to trial, on DailyMail.co.uk.

Mental health professionals: Here’s the training you never received about antisocial personality disorder, narcissism and psychopathy

“Crazy-making” — that’s how people describe involvements with those who have narcissistic or antisocial personality disorders, psychopathy, and even borderline personality disorder.

After enduring deception, manipulation, bald-faced lies and gaslighting, people who are in these relationships often feel like they’re losing their minds. What they need most is someone who believes their stories and can tell them what is going on. So they go for counseling.

Unfortunately, many times they discover that the therapist really doesn’t understand what they are talking about.

Over the years, I’ve heard this from countless people who have been targeted by exploiters.

In fact, I’ve heard from therapists and other mental health professionals who themselves were hooked into involvements with personality-disordered individuals. They say that nothing in their training prepared them for the experience.

Count the psychopaths in ‘Hell on Wheels’

Hell on Wheels

Thor Gundersen – “The Swede” – is the ultimate psychopath in “Hell on Wheels.”

Gunslingers, industrialists, cowboys and Indians, Yankees, rebels, carpetbaggers, immigrants, Mormons, freed slaves, settlers and whores — Hell on Wheels, the AMC television show about building the transcontinental railway after the Civil War, has them all.

The final season begins next month. What will happen to the hero, Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a former Confederate officer who became the construction “boss man”?

Hell on Wheels first aired in 2011, but my husband, Terry, and I found it later on Netflix. We are totally addicted. We can’t wait to see how all the story lines will play out.

What confrontations will Bohannon face before that final golden spike is driven into the steel?
