Millions of sociopaths

Millions of sociopaths live among us
At some point, you'll run into them

It's impossible to know exactly how many people are sociopaths. They are found in all segments of society, all walks of life. What you really need to know is that there are millions of them, they can be anywhere, and watch out.

Dr. Robert Hare estimates that 1% of the population in North America are born sociopaths. (He prefers the term "psychopaths.") The population of the United States is almost 300 million. That means there are nearly 3 million sociopaths in the country.

A related diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder (ASP). This is the term used by the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Mental health professionals generally estimate that 3% of men and 1% of women in the United States have ASP. That would be 4.3 million men and 1.5 million women, for a total of 5.8 million people.

Dr. Hare believes ASP has a broader definition than sociopath or psychopath. In other words, all sociopaths have ASP, but not everyone diagnosed with ASP is a sociopath.

The Lovefraud Risk Calculator only projects the number of sociopaths in a community. The calculation assumes that 1% of the U.S. population are sociopaths. Keep in mind that you need to watch out for antisocials as well.
